Go Back, Get It 2.2
Mundy
Third installment of the "Go Back, Get It" series. The phrase and title of “Go Back, Get It” is inspired by the word, Sankofa. A word originating from the Akan people of Ghana. Its literal translation is “Go back and get it!” which is a command to acknowledge the lessons and practices of the past. Then use this wisdom and bring into your present and future. When I dropped the first installment of this EP, in the fall of 2023 I just got back into talking to a therapist and truly unpacking my “past”. That EP was a very translucent view of what was going on with me during that time period. Usually most of my releases are very intentional and planned but this one was more spontaneous, and that was liberating. It got me out of my head creatively, which I consistently need. So coming off the heels of releasing my most recent album “Things I’ve Heard” I had a dilemma. I didn't know what was next creatively. I recorded a bunch of songs after the release with a general concept in mind but nothing was sonically and contextually synced up. I even made a rough arrangement of the album a couple times and it didn’t sit right. Eventually, I decided to scrap those songs and start fresh. About two months after I made that decision to toss those songs away and forget about them, something told me I need to go back and get them. And that is what this, “Go Back, Get It 2.2” an EP embodying humility, reflection and respect for my ancestry. An EP that taught me that progress comes through understanding and honoring history.
